Many students are kind of afraid of graduating. It’s one of those things that you will either look forward to or simply be terrified of. After college finishes, there are a lot of things that you will have to deal with. You will need to find yourself a job, start paying taxes and actually start behaving like a proper adult. Most people are not ready for that kind of responsibility and might even try postponing it just so they can enjoy being carefree students for a little while longer.
When I think of my graduation, I never think of it as something stressful or bad. I was one of those students who was actually really looking forward to graduating. I couldn’t wait to start taking on more responsibilities and prove to both myself and to my peers that I could make it and I could do all that I had in mind.
How it all went down
I had been looking forward to that day for ages. After my thesis was completed, I knew that the time was approaching. There are so many things that go through your mind when college is about to end and you have so many things to do. I would soon have to leave my dorm apartment, I would have to part ways with many good friends and come to terms with the fact that things might be a lot tougher than I expected them to be.
As the days approached, I started packing my things and appreciating the things I had experienced more and more. I knew I would have to start planning my future soon but I wasn’t quite sure whether I would like to do that at that very moment. My family had always been very supportive so I knew they would help me by giving me some space and the help I needed in order to find the best next step for my future.
When the day of my graduation came, I couldn’t possibly have felt more excited. It had honestly been a while since I had seen my family and friends from back home so I was looking forward to seeing everyone and celebrating my happy day with them. Friends from college who were graduating with me were all nervous and excited and we couldn’t help but be optimistic and ready to take on life and do our best in the world that awaited us.
The ceremony was short, and everyone was well dressed and had put on their best smiles. Getting my degree in my hand and holding it felt as if I had accomplished something very big and while college can be very tough and quite the challenge, I knew that the best and the most challenging part was yet to come.
Taking the time to think
The days that followed went by pretty fast as I decided to move back in with my parents for a short while until I could plan my next moves. I had gotten one or two job offers already but I was considering them and trying to see what would be best for my future.
Graduation just lasts for one day and it might be short but it truly is the end of one era and the start of another. What is the one thing that made your graduation day special to you?
